Volume 1, Number 39 October 2, 2000
Weekly Ministry Focus
Woman schedules abortion, then prays that Christians will stop her

Abortionist Kenneth Wright again traveled to Bakersfield last Monday and Tuesday. As he was inside aborting many babies, Christians stood on the sidewalks outside offering the Good News to babies and their mothers. In an apparent attempt to restrict this ministry, the FPA abortion chamber had the perimeter of their property measured for a fence or "security cable" which they plan to install. Meanwhile, the abortion chamber has apparently lost another security guard, who took another step closer to Jesus, announcing to the abortionist last week that he would not be returning. Here are a few selected reports from last week's ministry activities:

  • The last time that "Agatha," 27, was pregnant, she became terribly sick and almost died. Her husband died earlier this year, so now she must care for her children by herself. Agatha recently found out that she is pregnant again, and she felt that abortion was her only option. For years, Agatha had been very active in the ministry of a local church which is very pro-life, but she had been deeply hurt when the church didn't respond to a family tragedy.

Agatha scheduled an abortion for Tuesday, then she prayed that Christians would be there to stop her. Her mom brought her to the abortion chamber. As they got out of the car, Terri called out to them, saying "could you come over and talk to us for just a minute?" Agatha wanted to just hurry inside, but she stopped, because she sensed the Lord telling her "if you deny her, you're denying me!"

Agatha told Terri that she had a "friend" who was having an abortion, explaining that pregnancy would be a risk to her friend's health, and that her friend is a single mother who is struggling to care for the children she already has. (Agatha recognized the other sidewalk counselor who was with Terri, so she didn't want her to know she was speaking of herself.)

After talking for several minutes, Terri asked Agatha to step over to the side with her, and quietly said, "it's you, isn't it?" Agatha paused, and sheepishly said "yes." Terri began to cry, wrapping her arms around Agatha and imploring "please don't do this!" "I really felt that the Holy Spirit was speaking to her through me, and that the tears were from God," Terri later explained. Terri gave Agatha a "Hope For the Future" Bible and a teddy bear. After a few more minutes, Agatha and her mom left.

When they got home, Agatha's mom went in the bathroom and began sobbing, asking God to forgive her for the part she almost played in the death of her grandchild. She later told Terri she was sorry for the way she acted on Tuesday. "I was just trying to protect my daughter," Agatha's mother explained, "but I almost fell into Satan's trap." Agatha said "when I got home, I just kept reading that Bible you gave me, and I knew that God wants me to keep the baby." She has even picked out names already. (If it's a girl, the baby may be named Terri!)

  • "Johanna" (see Weekly Ministry Focus #38) came again on Tuesday, intending to abort her baby. She tried to sneak past Chuck, but Chuck said "hey, I know you!" Chuck encouraged Johanna, telling her that she has a "good man" who wants to support the baby. Johanna said God has been showing her many "signs" (on TV, at school, etc.) to tell her she should keep the baby, but she still isn't sure. She told Chuck that she would pray about it, and would consider not going through with the abortion.

  • "Adina", 20, came out of the abortion chamber on Monday, saying "I just couldn't go through with it!" Chuck and Terri prayed with her, gave her a baby gift and a "Hope for the Future" Bible. Chuck offered to show her the "Harder Truth" video. Afterwards, Adina said she was horrified by what the abortionist did. Then she confessed to Terri that she had aborted a baby a few months ago, but nobody had tried to talk to her before she went in. "The only way I could get through it was to force myself to think about something other than the baby," she explained. But this time, she thought about the baby, so she changed her mind.

  • "Aurora," 15, came to the abortion chamber on Monday with several family members. Her family claimed to be opposed to the abortion, so Terri and Chuck asked them to go up and try to talk her out of it. Aurora came out, but said she was scheduled to abort the following morning. Terri brought them to the LifeHouse to watch the "Harder Truth" video, but Aurora said she's still not sure what she will do. "Even if you have to watch her 24 hours a day, you need to save that grandbaby," Terri challenged Aurora's mother. As the family left, Terri gave Aurora a "Hope for the Future" Bible, a baby gift, and a baby outfit. On Tuesday morning, they returned, but they left again with the baby still alive. Aurora has now apparently scheduled to abort the baby on Tuesday, October 3. The family needs an apartment, and has called LSM several times over the last few days for help, but so far no apartment has been found.

  • Lori B. left a message in the guest book on the LSM website, telling about her experience with abortion in Bakersfield: "The people at the 'clinic' warned me about [the sidewalk counselors], giving me the impression that they were out to do me physical or emotional harm. How wrong they were.... A few years later, I gave my heart and life to Jesus Christ, and confessed my sin to fellow Christians... I looked at pictures of aborted babies on the internet tonight. I had never seen them before. I wept. One of them could have been mine... Thank you for your ministry, and I will be praying for you." (For the full text of Lori's message, visit the guestbook on the LSM website.)

Scripture Focus: John 3:16-21

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

As you meditate on this scripture, ask God to shine His Light brightly through you today.

Prayer Focus
  • Ask God to soften your heart today.

  • Pray for "Aurora" (see report above), asking God to give her the desire to keep her baby, to give her family the courage to stand up for the baby's life, and to provide adequate housing for the family. (Also pray for the other people mentioned in the ministry reports.)

  • Ask God to help us know how to prevent the abortion pill from being used by local doctors to kill babies.

FDA approves abortion pill

A special edition of the Weekly Ministry Focus was published on Thursday to respond to the FDA's approval of the abortion pill. If you didn't receive a copy of this report, please click here.
