Weekly Ministry Focus
Precocious preborn saves his own life by premature activity

At least three babies were saved from abortion last week in Bakersfield through "pregnancy evangelism" ministries. Abortionist Kenneth Wright once again killed babies on Monday (Feb. 5) and Tuesday (Feb. 6) at the Family Planning Associates abortion chamber, while the ministry on the sidewalks outside the killing center and at the LifeHouse pregnancy help center across the street was led by Monica (from Santa Maria) and Beth (from Fresno) who once again traveled to Bakersfield to allow LSM leader Terri Palmquist to rest from her recent birth. Here are a few selected reports from last week's ministry activities:

"Penny," 25, had made an appointment to abort her baby on Tuesday. She was accompanied by her boyfriend, who said he wanted to marry her someday, but first he planned to go into the military. Penny's mother also came along, even though she was against the abortion. Carlotta* talked to them from the sidewalk as they entered the abortion chamber. After they entered the waiting room, Penny suddenly sensed something she had never felt before: her baby inside was moving (which was remarkable, conidering the fact that she was only three months pregnant)!

Penny immediately knew that she couldn't go through with the abortion. She went outside to talk to Carlotta, who brought her, along with her mother and boyfriend, to the LifeHouse. Beth and Carlotta prayed with her, and Carlotta gave her a baby gift.

When "Haley," 16, found out she was two months pregnant, her boyfriend told her that her only choice was abortion. However, some of her family members wanted her to keep the baby; her parents said they would back up her up either way.

Haley contacted the FPA abortion chamber, setting her abortion appointment for Tuesday, February 6. But on Sunday afternoon, two days before her appointment, Haley noticed LifeSavers' ad in a phone book. She called LifeSavers, and spoke to Terri* for about 20 minutes. Haley was choking back the tears from the beginning of the phone call. Terri talked to Haley about the risks of abortion, and prayed with her, emphasizing that God has a plan for her baby. When Terri finished praying, Haley said "my Grandma said the same thing, that God has a plan or purpose for my baby." Haley explained that she is "kind of" a Christian, although she hasn't been to church for years.

Terri called Haley on Tuesday, and she said that she is keeping the baby, and that her boyfriend has changed his mind too. "Everyone is excited about the baby now!" Haley exclaimed.

Beth greeted "Vickie" and her friend as they entered FPA on Tuesday. Vickie intended to abort her baby, but she was open to receiving information from Beth. They accepted Beth's invitation to come to the LifeHouse.

After watching a video about abortion, Vickie and her friend were both shocked and in tears. Beth counseled them to turn to the Lord, explaining that "His love is greater than the evil of abortion."

Vickie's friend said that she had intended to abort a baby in the past, but her boyfriend came inside the abortion mill to get her out. Vickie had also scheduled an abortion at FPA in 1993, but she didn't go through with it because it was burned down. Vickie said she heard a baby crying, calling her name, that same week.

Beth prayed for them and gave them a Bible, along with several kinds of literature on abortion, abstinence, and the gospel.

"Celia," 18, came to the LifeHouse on Monday for a pregnancy test. The results were negative. After watching a video about abortion, she prayed with Debbie (an independent volunteer) to accept Jesus Christ as her Savior. Celia said she will also share the Lord with her boyfriend.

"Tonnette," 20, came to the LifeHouse on Tuesday for a pregnancy test. She is married, and already has given birth to four children, but she said she wouldn't consider abortion if she were pregnant again. Tonnette had been excited about being able to show Terri her youngest son--a child she had intended to abort last year (unfortunately, Terri wasn't there).

On her pregnancy test form, Tonnette wrote "Thanks, Terri for being here for me last year. My son's smile is welcome enough for me!"

Tonnette's test was negative. Beth prayed for her and gave her a prayer scapular.

"Teresa," 18, came with a friend to the LifeHouse on Tuesday for a pregnancy test. Teresa is single and has attended a local Catholic church for three years. Beth showed them a video about abortion, and talked to them in depth about the Christian view of abortion and chastity. Teresa's greatest fear was to tell her mom she was pregnant. Teresa's mom is single and has had an abortion.

Beth also counseled Teresa's friend, since she asked Beth for condoms. By the time she left, she said she was pro-life and agreed to consider chastity. Teresa's test was negative. Beth provided Teresa with various literature, including post-abortion literature to share with her mother. Beth encouraged Teresa to go to confession and pray her rosary so that she can be chaste.

Vince (an independent volunteer) met "Sally" this week at a Christian conference. She told him that she had a baby last April after talking with someone at the LifeHouse. Sally is living with her parents while she goes to school in preparation for a career in teaching. She also told Vince that she wants to volunteer with a pregnancy help ministry.

Scripture Focus: Romans 1:18-32

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Pray that God will silence those who have exchanged His truth for a lie.

Prayer Focus
  • Pray that the bad weather expected this week will not hamper the effectiveness of the "pregnancy evangelism" ministries.
  • Ask God to help "Teresa" and her friend (see report above) to learn to be chaste. (Also pray for the others mentioned in the ministry reports).
  • Pray that God will thwart the plans of the Kern County Health Department's free condom promotion (including colored and flavored condoms) on this coming Wednesday (Valentine's Day).
  • Ask God to expose the abortion industry's lies as the dangerous abortion pill comes to Bakersfield, and pray that those involved in the Bakersfield pro-life ministry will equip themselves with the appropriate approach to deal with women who intend to use the abortion pill.

Abortion pill comes to Bakersfield

Family Planning Associates announced on February 6 that it has begun committing abortion using mifepristone (also known as Mifeprex, RU-486, and the French abortion pill).

The FPA press release quoted abortionist Steve Lichtenberg claiming that FPA can use mifepristone for abortions up to 9 weeks. However, the US Food and Drug Administration only approved mifepristone for use up to 7 weeks. (This may just be an advertising ploy, following the pattern FPA has set in the past; for example, FPA advertises abortion to 24 weeks at the Bakersfield abortion chamber, but sends women to Los Angeles for abortions after 19 1/2 weeks.)

Among various claims included in the press release, Lichtenberg tried to promote the safety of this drug by noting that "millions" of women in China have used it "successfully." But considering China's brutal one-child policy, is is unlikely that China would report any complications or fatalities from this drug, so citing the Chinese track record as an indication of success is disingenuous. However, China is a key factor in considering the safety of mifepristone, because the drug is manufactured in China by a company which has been cited by the US Food and Drug Administration for producing tainted drugs.

Here are some key points to consider when talking to women considering the abortion pill:
Five weeks after conception

  • A baby dies: by the time a woman realizes she is pregnant, her baby's heart is already beating and brain waves can already be detected. At just five weeks, the baby already has a recognizable face, arms, and legs.
  • Mifepristone cannot be used alone; another drug, Cytotec, must be used to expel the dead baby. Cytotec's manufacturer has issued a letter warning that "serious adverse events," including maternal death, have been reported when Cytotec has been used by pregnant women.
  • Excessive bleeding, nausea, and diarrhea are common side effects. Some complications will require hospitalization.
  • Women are more likely to see the remains of their baby after it is expelled, because this will likely happen at home.
  • The cost of aborting a baby by mifepristone will be at least as much as a surgical abortion.

For more details on the dangers of mifepristone, consult the LifeHouse website.
