When Joselyn told her friend that she wanted an abortion, her friend remembered seeing our banner outside our LifeHouse pregnancy help center at 28 Emmons Park Drive, adjacent to Taft College,  so she brought her to our door.  But we weren’t there!  It was a Tuesday, and unfortunately we aren’t open on Tuesdays.

But even when we aren’t open, there is a phone right by the front door of the LifeHouse which enables women to contact us 24/7.

So Joselyn’s friend picked up the phone and pressed the button to call us.

Tuesdays are abortion days in Bakersfield, so  I was outside the abortion center offering help to pregnant women when I received the call from Joselyn and her friend at the front door of the LifeHouse.

Because the woman on the phone spoke mostly Spanish, but one of our prayer supporters nearby was able to interpret for me.

Joselyn is pregnant with her fourth child and doesn’t have a husband.  She is already struggling to try to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads, so another baby with added responsibilities was overwhelming.  We finally got her to agree to come back the next day, which was Wednesday, so that I could meet with her in person and see what we could do to help.

I really wondered if she would show up, but around 10 am I saw them walking up the sidewalk, so the battle was half over.  Now it was up to God to use me to get through to her, helping her to realize that this baby is a blessing and that God has a plan for them both!

I started off by having her fill out some paperwork.  Joselyn indicated that she is a Christian and has been attending a Taft church.

Her main problem is that she needs a job because her hours have been cut drastically.  She is able to clean houses or do other odd jobs to earn money.  Please contact us at 763-4791 if you can help her!

After she filled out our paperwork, she took a pregnancy test.  While we waited for the results, I showed her the “Creation” video, which shows the baby develop right before their eyes, starting when the sperm meets the egg until the baby is nursing at his mother’s breast.

Following that video, I showed her a video of an actual abortion, to help her understand that abortion is damaging not only to the baby but also to her own body.  Usually after a woman sees these videos, her heart is ready to repent of even thinking about abortion, but that wasn’t the case with Joselyn.

She had tears in her eyes, but her circumstances just seemed too hard for her.  They say a woman chooses abortion the same way an animal caught in a trap will panic and gnaw off its own leg to get free.  Well, we at LifeSavers are here (though God’s grace) to open that trap and bandage up that wound so that it can heal.

It will hurt.  It won’t be easy getting around for a while, but in the end you don’t lose your leg or your baby!

I talked with her for quite a while about how God created her and her baby and that her baby wasn’t a mistake, because God doesn’t make mistakes.   She seemed a little more convinced that we cared and that there was hope.

Then I let her know that we will do our best to be there for her and her children.  We are working on an Elizabeth League group at a Taft church to provide ongoing help and encouragement, including a baby shower, to Joselyn (and hopefully other women) throughout her pregnancy.

By the end of an hour and a half or so of being with her, I finally felt comfortable enough to end the talk knowing that she had a change of heart.

We faced a difficult afternoon as the devil threw some difficult distractions at us, but we wanted to make sure we didn’t let the sun go down before we provided practical help to Joselyn.

Our funds had been extremely strapped until the past few weeks, but thanks to the generosity of people at seven different Taft area churches, we had some money available to help Joselyn.

So we went to Save-A-Lot and filled a shopping with groceries for her.  We finally found her tiny house in an alley.  When she saw us her entire face lit up in gratitude and she kept thanking me, giving me a big hug.

Is this ministry worth the investment in Taft?  I sure think so!

We will provide the training if you provide the time!  If talking to a woman who is facing a crisis is more than you want to deal with, we can find other ways for you to help.  We look forward to seeing the Taft community get behind this ministry so that God can use us to have a bigger impact on Taft, to His glory!
