Christian mother accidentally finds life while seeking death

When “Allison” looked in the new Bakersfield phone book hoping to find the local abortion center, she saw an ad for LifeSavers Ministries instead, noticing that the ad mentioned “abortion information.”  When Terri answered the phone, Allison explained that she wanted to abort her baby because she thought that the baby in her womb was fathered by a man who is not the father of her other children.   Allison attends a local church, but she is afraid of her church (especially the pastor’s wife) knowing about her pregnancy, because they have been very harshly critical of Allison and her children.

Terri encouraged Allison to see the child in her womb as a blessing from God, not as a burden.  After talking to Terri for about an hour, Allison said “what I don’t understand is how you can work at a place like this if you don’t believe in abortions.”

When Terri explained that LifeSavers Ministries is not an abortion facility, Allison countered, “but your ad says abortion information.”  Allison took another look at the ad.  “Oh, wait a minute,” she said.  “Now I see!  It says ‘Life is a Precious Gift!’”

“So what you’re saying,” Allison told Terri, “is that God can turn this around for a blessing?”

Allison needs a job to help provide for her children.  Her baby’s father has left her and she is taking him to court for child support.  Allison had been earning $9 per hour until her mother had to stop babysitting for her.  Now that Allison has found another daycare provider, her former job is no longer available.  She can cook, clean, babysit, and is willing to be trained.  She has experience working for a large “big box” store and a fast food restaurant.

Incidentally, the church Allison attends has been supportive of pro-life efforts.  Even in the “best” churches, the lives of women like Allison (and their children) hang in the balance.  God’s people need to be there to offer help in their time of need.
