Remembering Lewis Ament

Lewis Ament receives award from Terri and Tim Palmquist of LifeSavers Ministries in 2004

LifeSavers Ministries presented Lewis Ament with a new pair of shoes at our 20th anniversary “Labor of Love” banquet in 2004. The shoes were a symbol of Lewis’ years of service, as Tim Palmquist joked “He’s worn off a lot of shoe leather over the years.” Lewis was literally speechless.

This morning at 10 am, LifeSavers Ministries members will join with family and friends of Lewis Ament in celebrating his life. The service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church (located just five blocks from the FPA abortion center, at 26th and Drake Streets).

Before LifeSavers Ministries began, Lewis Ament helped to pave the way by standing alone outside the FPA abortion center (then located at 5700 Stockdale Hwy), quietly praying and holding a sign. Over the years, he continued to be a friend of this ministry, providing music for various events over the years such as the 1998 opening of the LifeHouse. In addition to continuing his long tradition of holding a sign outside the abortion chamber, he also occasionally played his violin there.

Lewis also paved the way for the memorial displays of crosses outside the abortion chamber (an ongoing component of our 40 Days for Life campaigns). He was the one who first had the courage to place a cross in the grass in the public area outside the abortion chamber.

“The memory of Lewis Ament will always live on in our hearts,” commented Tim Palmquist, administrator of LifeSavers Ministries. “We were blessed to know him not only through ministry activities, but our children were often in his home for piano lessons, and the music he taught will always be a part of our lives.”

The following obituary was prepared by the family of Lewis Ament:

Lewis Richard Ament
July 2, 1923 – April 8, 2013

Several strong passions guided Lew’s life and made him the man he was:

- God and family
- Music
- Protection of life (especially the unborn)

City Attorney’s confusion requires clarification

Bakersfield City Attorney Ginny Gennaro

Bakersfield City Attorney Ginny Gennaro

Last week, another pro-life organization invited Bakersfield City Attorney Ginny Gennaro to comment on our months of efforts to encourage the Bakersfield City Council to consider a Human Life Ordinance.

Gennaro reportedly told the group that she asked us to provide her with an example of another California city which has taken a strong pro-life stand, but that we never complied with her request.  But the truth should be evident to anyone who has taken the time to view the selection of past City Council videos we have posted here. Specifically, on November 28, Tim Palmquist presented a historic resolution passed decades ago by the Santa Ana City Council which condemned abortion with much more forceful language than what is used in the proposed Human Life Ordinance.   In addition, Palmquist presented civil action language from another city’s ordinance which was used word-for-word in the Human Life Ordinance. Videos document appeals to Bakersfield City Council

When we learned in June about the new Planned Parenthood mega abortion center being built in Bakersfield, we began going to Bakersfield City Council meetings, asking the Council to do something to stop this killing center.

At first we didn’t know what the Council could do — but we asked them to do something anyway. When the City Attorney claimed that the Council was powerless, God led us to learn more about the City’s powers, which resulted in the proposed Human Life Ordinance. Eventually dozens of pastors appealed to the Council to protect human life, while the City Attorney claimed again that the matter was “not in the City’s purview.” Over the course of the past few months, the Human Life Ordinance was edited several times to protect the City from litigation, and re-presented to the Council for their consideration.

The story is far from over. Perhaps if you take an hour or so to watch these pastors, nurses, students, and others submit their appeals to the Council, you will find God leading you to become a part of this historic story.

Anointed pastors plead for city to protect life!

God spoke powerfully last night through six pastors (and one non-pastor) at the Bakersfield City Council meeting. The pastors were asking the City Council, including two new members who were just seated last night, to consider the proposed Human Life Ordinance.

Please be praying for each member of the City Council as they consider what God wants them to do.

Below is a preliminary transcript of the pastors’ comments. It may be edited as necessary to more accurately represent the pastors’ comments.

(Some of the pastors mention the seal of the City of Bakersfield, which includes the words “In God We Trust,” although the seal was not visible during this time, being covered by a screen.)

Judge not…?

Singing Let Me Live

Singing Let Me Live

Teresita, along with Lupita, myself, and several others, often sing the song “Let Me Live” on the front lines of Bakersfield’s FPA abortion chamber, as we pray and plead for moms to have a change of heart. For each of us, this is a very emotional experience, something that affects us personally.

Teresita holds the hand of her sweet little 3 year old, with her full term little girl Miracle still in her womb. Lupita’s grand baby came close to being aborted. And I have given birth to 11 children and miscarried one child.

Each of us in our own way is reaching out to these vulnerable women with the love of Christ, not seeking to judge anyone, but seeking to provide real help. And so it is very frustrating when other Christians judge us for this outreach.
