Weekly Ministry Focus
Teenage mother shows off her saved newborn

Last week was an extremely slow week for the pro-life "pregnancy evangelism" ministry outside the Family Planning Associates abortion mill in Bakersfield and at the LifeHouse pregnancy help center across the street. Abortions were committed on Monday (Feb. 12) and Tuesday (Feb. 13) at FPA by Kenneth Wright, but Wright left very early both days. At least one baby was saved from abortion. Here are a few selected reports from last week's ministry activities:

"Judith," 15, stopped by the LifeHouse on Monday to show off her newborn baby boy, "Jared." Judith had scheduled to abort Jared at FPA on September 18, but changed her mind after talking to Terri* on the sidewalk and at the LifeHouse (see Weekly Ministry Focus Vol. 1 No. 38). Terri had also helped Judith find a doctor, and accompanied her to her first prenatal appointment. Judith had shared her testimony at LifeSavers' Mexican Dinner in December.

Jared was born three weeks early, on February 6. He weighed 5 pounds 6 ounces and was 19 1/4" long. "He's very cute," Terri said. Judith said she needed a diaper bag, so Terri gave her one that had been donated to the LifeHouse.

Judith continues to live with her pro-abortion mother, but her mother is now overjoyed with her new grandson. A baby shower for Jared will be held soon. If you would like to attend the shower, or to send a gift, please contact Terri.

Social worker Elizabeth Mojica, who works at Mary's Shelter in Santa Ana, California, sent the following note to LifeSavers after reading a recent report in the Los Angeles Mission newspaper:

To those of you who dedicate your time, love, and energy to help those in need, thank you for all that you do! I read your article in the L.A. Mission about the woman who first sought to have an abortion when she learned that the baby might be born with Down Syndrome. This is just one example of how your ministry has SAVED lives. I work at Mary's Shelter in Santa Ana, Ca., (a shelter for pregnant minors) and I have a client who is from your area. She shared with me how she too wanted to have an abortion; however your ministry educated her about the truths of what an abortion truly is. This minor is doing very well and she plans to place her baby for adoption. May God continue to bless all of you!

A volunteer from another pregnancy center sent a note to LifeSavers this week about another baby saved from abortion. The couple had decided to abort so that nobody would know about the pregnancy. They spoke to a man outside the FPA abortion chamber who was "very helpful." "The boyfriend said he would like to thank the man, but didn't know who he was," the volunteer wrote.

Scripture Focus: Habakkuk 2:4-14

"See, he is puffed up;
   his desires are not upright--
but the righteous will live by his faith --

indeed, wine betrays him;
he is arrogant and never at rest.

Because he is as greedy as the grave
and like death is never satisfied,

he gathers to himself all the nations
and takes captive all the peoples.

"Will not all of them taunt him with ridicule and scorn, saying,

"`Woe to him who piles up stolen goods
and makes himself wealthy by extortion!
How long must this go on?'

Will not your debtors suddenly arise?
Will they not wake up and make you tremble?
Then you will become their victim.

Because you have plundered many nations,
the peoples who are left will plunder you.

For you have shed man's blood;
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

"Woe to him who builds his realm by unjust gain
to set his nest on high,   to escape the clutches of ruin!

You have plotted the ruin of many peoples,
shaming your own house and forfeiting your life.

The stones of the wall will cry out,
and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.

"Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed
and establishes a town by crime!

Has not the LORD Almighty determined
that the people's labor is only fuel for the fire,
that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD,
as the waters cover the sea.

Pray for God's glory to increase today through this ministry.

Prayer Focus
  • Pray that God will help every person involved in the "pregnancy evangelism" ministry today to be as effective as possible.
  • Ask God to bring more harvesters into these fields of ministry, so that more women and children can be saved.
  • Pray that God will continue to provide for the needs of "Judith" and "Jared" (see report above). (Also pray for the others mentioned in the ministry reports).
  • Pray for Maria, who has been an employee of the FPA abortion chamber for several years. Pray that God will bring events into her life which will force her to turn to Him.

Abortionist trials magnify abortion dangers

The recent trials of two abortionists may not have received much media attention, but women who are considering abortion should be informed of one key point agreed upon by both abortionists.

Florida abortionist James Scott Pendergraft faces up to 30 years in federal prison after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit extortion, lying under oath, and mail fraud. Now Pendergraft is facing a malpractice lawsuit from a woman who claims that, among other errors, he perforated her uterus during an abortion.

Pendergraft's lawyer, Richard Ford, admitted that the woman's uterus was perforated, but claimed that Pendergraft's actions were appropriate. "Obviously, it was perforated. This is a known complication of this type of surgery," Ford said. "The experts said he didn't violate the standard of care, and we're going to be defending it."

In Arizona, the jury is deliberating the case of abortionist John Biskind, who is charged with manslaughter for the abortion death of LouAnne Herron. After perforating her uterus, leaving a 2 inch by 3/4 of an inch hole, Biskind left Herron, visiting his tailor while she bled to death.

Biskind testified in his own defense that perforating a uterus is not uncommon during an abortion. The prosecution's expert witness, Dr. Sidney Wechsler, agreed.

Both abortionists argue that they should not be held accountable for perforating a woman's uterus, because perforation is a known complication of abortion. Most women who abort their babies don't realize it, but by consenting to an abortion, they have agreed to allow their uterus to be perforated.

As in the case of LouAnne Herron, perforation of a uterus can be fatal. Here in Bakersfield, Helen Herron died after her uterus was perforated during an abortion by FPA's "back-up" doctor, William Stanley. And in another notorious case, Barstow's Sharon Hamptlon died after her uterus was perforated by abortionist Bruce Steir.

Some may try to deflect concern about the risks of abortion by claiming that these abortionists are just the abortion industry's "bad apples," but in fact, as Mark Crutcher points out in his book Lime 5, these practices of these abortionists are "representative of the entire abortion industry."

Whether abortions are committed in "back alleys" or in comfortable doctors' offices, they are dangerous for women and their children.

FPA's "preoperative information" sheet admits that "even when the surgeon is highly skilled and experienced in the procedure there is a risk of perforation of the uterus...." It shouldn't be hard to understand why shoving a sharp instrument into a woman's uterus could result in perforation or other injury.

Yes, perforation is not uncommon, and it can be deadly. Do women really understand this before they agree to abort their babies? In most cases, women just want to get the abortion over with, and would prefer not to be confused by the facts. But our responsibility as "watchmen on the wall" under Ezekiel 33 includes not only speaking out for the life of her child, but warning each woman of how this abortion could impact her own life (physically, spiritually, and emotionally).
