Weekly Ministry Focus
Baby survives in spite of irresponsible men

For the first time this year, no abortions were committed in Bakersfield last Monday! Abortionist Kenneth Wright returned to the FPA abortion chamber on Tuesday. At least two babies were saved from abortion, as God touched women's hearts through the pregnancy evangelism ministry at the LifeHouse pregnancy help center and on the streets outside the FPA killing center.

After struggling for years to find a reliable man to be a father for her children, "Orthella," 27, was overwhelmed with frustration. In despair, she almost allowed herself to become an accomplice to the destruction of her own child last week.

The father of Orthella's three young boys lives in another country, and hasn't been a part of her life for several years. He has not provided any financial support for his children, so Orthella found it necessary to apply for welfare.

Understanding the importance of male role models, Orthella looked for another man to fill the role of father in her sons' lives. Four years ago, she became involved with a new boyfriend. Although he did not get along very well with her sons, she kept hoping that in time things would change. But instead of getting better, things got worse. When Orthella found out she was pregnant, her boyfriend abandoned her.

As a Catholic, Orthella knew that abortion was a sin. She had chosen not to abort her sons, in spite of the fact that the circumstances of her previous pregnancies were also difficult. But this time her problems were more than she could bear. She made an appointment to abort her baby.

Orthella drove herself to the abortion chamber and walked past the Christians on the sidewalk without delay. She nervously filled out the paperwork and had her blood drawn. As she waited for her name to be called, she could hear the pleas from the pro-lifers outside the clinic. She began to wonder if she could really go through with aborting her child. After an ultrasound examination indicated that Orthella was 8 1/2 weeks pregnant, she decided to reschedule the abortion for the following week.

As Orthella walked to her car, Terri* asked "is there anything we can do to help?"

"Yes!" Orthella quickly responded. Terri invited her across the street to the LifeHouse so that she could watch a video which shows what happens to a woman and her child during an abortion. After seeing the video, Orthella told Terri that she would no longer consider aborting the child. Terri gave Orthella a gift box filled with baby items, along with some informative literature.

A few days later, Terri called Orthella to tell her about an employment opportunity. Orthella thanked Terri, and said that all of her thoughts of abortion are now gone.

"Kelsie," a young Mormon girl who recently turned 14, has been having a serious relationship with a 22- year-old man. Kelsie's mother has allowed the young man to sleep in Kelsie's room numerous times, but when she heard that Kelsie could be pregnant, she was shocked and upset, threatening to have him arrested.

"Vera," a good friend of Kelsie's family, decided to help Kelsie get a pregnancy test, and if necessary, an abortion. "She's too young to handle a baby," Vera said. Driving down H Street toward the FPA abortion chamber, Vera noticed the banner outside the LifeHouse which says "free pregnancy test - walk-ins welcome."

At the LifeHouse, Vera told Terri that she had experienced abortion over 20 years ago after she was raped at the age of 16. "There was no way I could have kept the baby," Vera insisted.

"I have my work cut out for me," Terri thought. She knew that the abortion video would be her best tool to reach Kelsie and Vera. Terri invited them to watch the video while they waited for the test results. As they watched, Terri explained how the abortionist must force the cervix open in order to get the baby out. Kelsie and Vera could see from the video how much force the abortionist uses as he shoves metal rods inside the woman's cervix. "The risk of cervical cancer and breast cancer increases after abortion," Terri explained.

"I have cervical cancer, and I've wondered if it could have been caused by the abortion," Vera interjected.

"If I had been there when you went in for your abortion, I would have tried to explain the risks for your own life," Terri said. "If someone like you had been there to help me, I probably wouldn't have done it," Vera said.

When Kelsie saw the test results, tears filled her eyes as she realized that she is pregnant. "We'll make it through," Vera said as she hugged Kelsie. "You're not alone. You've got help, so you can do it!"

A few days later Vera told Terri that she broke the news to Kelsie's mom, and she handled the situation better than they thought she would. They are glad that they have support.

Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 10:3-6

"A stronghold is a mind set impregnated with hopelessness that causes the believer to accept as unchangeable something that he/she knows is contrary to the will of God."

- Ed Silvoso
(as quoted in
Possessing the Gates of the Enemy
by Cindy Jacobs)

"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled."

Please agree with us in prayer, asking God to break down the spiritual strongholds which stand in the way of expanding God's glory in Bakersfield.
