Weekly Ministry Focus
God saves an angry young woman's baby

God saved at least three babies from abortion last week in Bakersfield through the "pregnancy evangelism" ministry at the LifeHouse pregnancy help center and across the street on the sidewalks outside the Family Planning Associates abortion chamber. Abortionist Kenneth Wright committed abortions on Tuesday (Mar. 6). Here are a few selected reports from last week's ministry activities:

"Evelyn" was driven to the FPA abortion chamber on Tuesday by a friend. As Evelyn walked toward the entrance on the sidewalk, Terri* approached her, but Evelyn yelled "get away from me!"

Inside the waiting room, Evelyn asked the receptionist what time her friend should come back to pick her up, then Evelyn went back outside to tell her friend when to return. Terri asked "is there anything we can do to help?" Evelyn snapped "yeah, shut your mouth!" As Evelyn re-entered the waiting room, Terri said "if you go through with this, you will regret it someday, mark my words!"

About 10 minutes later, Evelyn came out of the waiting room again. As she talked on a cellular phone, she went to the bottom of the stairs and sat down. After a few minutes, she looked up at Terri and the others on the sidewalk and said "you guys must be doing something right, because I can't do it!"

Later, when she walked over to Terri and Beth on the sidewalk, Terri asked "were you too far along?" Evelyn said, "No, I just couldn't do it. I started filling out the papers and thought 'I can't do this!'"

"Misty," 31, a mother of three young children, began dating "Carl" in October, after going through a divorce. Eventually she moved in with with Carl and his mother. Last week she found out she was pregnant, and Carl told her to have an abortion.

Misty happened to be looking through the phone book Monday afternoon, and noticed the "Pregnancy Options" guide sponsored by LifeSavers in the LocalSource section of the directory. She listened to one of the information messages, and when prompted to press a button to talk to someone at LifeSavers, she pressed the button.

When Terri answered the phone, Misty said "I'm not sure why I called, but my boyfriend said he will leave me if I don't have an abortion. I can't have an abortion and I don't know what to do!" Terri said "if he would leave you because you won't abort your baby, he's not worth being with." Misty agreed. Terri talked with her for quite a while, and then prayed with her. Terri also prayed that God would change Carl's heart.

On Wednesday, Terri called Misty to see how she was doing. She said that Carl is mad at her, but "there's no way that I can kill my baby!" She is trying to find her own place to live.

"Thaeda," 19, came with her husband "Mel" to the LifeHouse on Tuesday for a pregnancy test. They have attended a local Pentecostal church for several years, and have one child, who is in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Thaeda said that she knows that abortion is "murder," although she has already aborted one baby. But she said her abortion hasn't affected her. Beth challenged her to consider whether her abortion may relate to the reason her other child was taken away.

Thaeda's test results were negative. Beth gave her post abortion literature, information about Natural Family Planning, and evangelistic literature. When Beth talked to Thaeda and Mel about the Lord, Thaeda said they have known Him before but had gone away from Him.

"Dee," 20, was on the operating table about to have her baby aborted on Tuesday when she changed her mind. After she left the abortion chamber, she decided to come to the LifeHouse. She told Terri "I couldn't do it because of the people on the sidewalk." Beth showed her a video about abortion, and Dee told Beth that she had an abortion last year, but she is Catholic.

After seeing the video, Dee said that she is now pro-life. "My boyfriend's not worth it," Dee insisted. Beth provided Dee with post-abortion literature and referred her to a local priest who has a post-abortion counseling ministry.

"Tenille," 23, intended to abort her baby on Tuesday, but Beth talked to her on the sidewalk, inviting her to come to the LifeHouse to see a video about abortion. Terri called Tenille on Wednesday, and Tenille said she is keeping the baby.

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 43:5-11

Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, `Give them up!' and to the south, `Do not hold them back.' Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth-- everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."

Lead out those who have eyes but are blind, who have ears but are deaf. All the nations gather together and the peoples assemble. Which of them foretold this and proclaimed to us the former things? Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right, so that others may hear and say, "It is true." "You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior.

Ask God to use you as His witness for the lives of the children He has created.

Prayer Focus
  • Pray that God will open the eyes of everyone who is entering the abortion chamber, so that they will be able to sense the presence of their children.
  • Pray for "Mandy," 18, who intends to abort her baby, but agreed to meet with Terri at the LifeHouse on Friday afternoon after her father called LifeSavers. (Also pray for the women mentioned in the ministry reports).
  • Ask God to open the eyes of everyone who does business with the abortion chamber this week. Pray that those who are Christians will use their contacts with the abortion chamber staff as an effective witness for Christ and His children, and pray that those who are not believers will be convicted of their need to surrender to God and stand for life.

LSM sponsors "Pregnancy Options" guide in local phone directory

Through the generous assistance of a local donor, LifeSavers Ministries is sponsoring a "Pregnancy Options" guide in this year's Pacific Bell Bakersfield directory. The guide is located in the LocalSource section (the red pages just before the table of contents).

The guide provides information on how to access recorded messages on various topics relating to pregnancy and childbirth. To access the "Pregnancy Options" guide's messages, dial 661-635-1000, then enter a code from 5283 through 5307.

A key motivation for sponsoring this guide was the opportunity to shed some light on the pro-abortion propaganda regarding abortion pills (code #5307). Other special messages prepared for this guide include "Risks of abortion" (#5304), "Pregnant and Confused?" (#5305), and "Breast cancer and abortion" (#5306). IT Network, the company which produces the LocalSource guide, had refused to provide the full content of some of these messages until recently, but as of last Friday all of the messages are now available.
